CALEXICO – The first of the local high schools to don their caps and gowns this graduation season was Vincent Memorial Catholic High School (VMCHS) who graduated its Class of 2024 on Friday, May 24, here at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with a Baccalaureate Mass and subsequent Commencement Ceremony. Eighty three (83) students from the Imperial and Mexicali valleys celebrated their high school graduation from the only private high school in the Imperial Valley. In addition to the school’s tradition Catholic mass celebration, commencement ceremony, various student awards and awards for “Fidelity Families” (families who have had all their children schools in Catholic education for 12 consecutive years) and “Fidelity Students” (individual students schooled in Catholic education from grades 1-12), a special award was also given to outgoing VMCHS Principal Sister Guadalupe “Lupita” Hernández as the Teacher of the Year for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego.
The 2023-2024 school year was the last school year with Hernández as principal, having served as the Catholic high school’s principal for 12 years. “(Graduating) is a surreal experience; I can’t believe it’s happening,” VMCHS Class of 2024 valedictorian, Mia Gutiérrez, said.
