After digging up some interesting history, a trio of students from Vernon's Mission Hill Elementary made their school proud when they represented their school at the B.C. provincial Heritage Fair in Victoria last week.

Sawyer Grace, Tanveer Toor and Rowan Wilson got the nod to head to Victoria July 2-5 after their projects were selected to move onto the next round at the regional level. Grace, 10, first presented her Heritage Fair project on Dorothy Grant at her school on April 10. “Dorothy Grant is an Indigenous fashion designer and she is a proud example of women's creativity,” Grace said.



“Her story is one of trailblazing and courage. Her dream was to show Indigenous culture in her art and express the beauty of it..

.She has been very successful in her career and still is today, inspiring even more Indigenous women and girls to follow their dreams.” Grace learned that Grant started on her path after seeing that non-Indigenous designers were using Indigenous artwork in their designs.

"She didn't think that was right," Grace said, "so she reclaimed the show with her own Indigenous fashion." In researching her project, Grace reached out to Grant, her hero, and set up a Zoom interview. Grant, a member of the Order of Canada, told the student: “My purpose has always been to make people feel good about themselves in my clothing, and that in a word in Haida is called yahguudang, which means to have respect for all around you and for yourself.
