Police found their bodies near one another in about 15 feet of water in Lake Hartwell near Pike Road and Old Jewel Bridge Road. Police said the boys had been involved in a large group chat with other students daring each other to jump off a bridge near the Twelve Mile Boat Ramp.

Witnesses reportedly saw the boys jumping in and one of them landing awkwardly in the water, Chief Deputy Chuck James said. James said: “Reports from an individual on the shore sounded like he landed awkwardly, which might have caused him to go into distress.” Another student jumped in after the boy to try to save him, but he too went into distress, James said.

James said both of the boys went underwater and never came back up, likely due to the strong current under the bridge. DON'T MISS: NYC fas.
