With certain predictability members of the Republican Party, in Donald Trump’s image, are now shamelessly rewriting history. After years of Trump’s stoking of the “stochastic terrorism” fire and openly inciting violence it would appear that the Republican Party is turning on the hypocrisy tap. Hearing House Speaker Mike Johnson saying “Everyone needs to turn the rhetoric down” nauseated me.
I don’t recall any senior Republicans taking Trump, or his bumbling son Don jnr, to task for mocking Paul Pelosi when he was viciously attacked with a hammer. Outrageous claims by people like congressman for Georgia, Republican Mike Collins, that “Biden sent the orders” or Republican senator for South Carolina, Tim Scott, claiming “an assassination attempt aided by the radical left” are signs that sycophantic fealty to Trump goes above and beyond truth. The now-deceased shooter was a young, white male and a registered Republican and not a member of one of the many groups that Trump has demonised.
Trump, notable for his carnival barker flair and propensity to lie, steal, cheat and commit criminal acts with gusto will capitalise on this event. David Legat, South Morang A survivor but not a hero Surviving an assassination attempt does no.
