One of the meals that the Salvation Army Lassies cooked was a sweet baked treat that would later be called the Salvation Army Doughnut. In 1938, the Salvation Army created National Doughnut Day as a way to honor the Salvation Army Lassies, according to Nationaldaycalendar.com.
