PAUL MESCAL had the fashion world split earlier this week with his latest ensemble. The Irish star of Normal People and Aftersun stepped out at Gucci’s spring-summer 2005 fashion show in Milan, showing off his pins in a pair of pinstripe shorts from the new range. Maynooth native Paul, 28, has a liking for tighty-whitey O'Neills shorts when jogging.

But his latest thigh-skimmers caught everyone’s attention as he teamed them with a loose-fitting Gucci shirt, just three buttons done up. He finished off his look with black sunglasses, white socks and horsebit loafers, all from the Italian fashion house. Oh, and gold hoop earrings.

Love it or hate it, the fashion-forward look has had plenty of people talking. Here, Irish Sun fashion experts HARRY FINNEGAN and JODIE MCCORMACK, argue over whether Paul’s outfit is pure style or a cry for help. Fresh off the GAA pitch in Maynooth, Paul Mescal burst on to our screens with runaway TV hit Normal People in 2020.

He was catapulted to fame and lauded as a sex symbol, not least for his apprec-iation for the humble O’Neills shorts. The Connell effect saw O’Neills sales soar and made the GAA shorts an unlikely fashion staple. And this week Paul caused even more of a flurry with super-short shorts, boxers almost, at a Gucci show.

He allowed his legs be the centre of attention, and tied his look together with a Gucci staple, the horsebit black loafer. Paul is a throwback to movie stars of old – butch, he’s burly but not afraid to .
