Obsessed with Prime? Can’t get enough of Monster? Drink a daily Red Bull? Sorry, but energy drinks have been branded the ‘ultimate ick’. In a viral article, The Independent columnist Helen Coffey dubbed them ‘the equivalent of someone telling you their “hobbies” included listening to Joe Rogan podcasts and contributing to Reddit forums from their parents’ basement.’ Savage.

The drinks once synonymous with heady student days (mixed with Jägermeister, of course) are now seriously falling out of favour. Forget wings, they’re giving cringe. Labour also recently announced plans to ban the sale of energy drinks to under-16s, saying that it was ‘not justifiable or acceptable’ for retailers to be selling the caffeine filled beverages to kids.



And, the US-based Mayo Clinic recently found that energy drinks were linked to an increase risk of an abnormal heart rhythm, also known as arrhythmia. So, it begs the question: what other foods are giving us the ick? Perhaps the sight of a man eating a certain menu item makes you look away in horror? Or maybe there’s one dish that just seem a bit, well, pathetic. We asked the team at Metro.
