Princess Margaret cameos on The Archers in 1984 The Archers continues to be a huge hit on BBC Radio 4 and the contemporary rural drama is celebrating 73 years on air. Following the residents of the farming community of Ambridge, it has featured a number of celebrity guests over the years. Having aired more than 20,000 episodes, it is believed to be the world's longest-running present-day drama by number of instalments.

The show has featured cameos from the likes of Dame Judi Dench to Alan Titchmarsh, Chris Moyles, Kirstie Allsopp and Rylan. However, one of the first and most highly-regarded cameos was from Princess Margaret and the Duke of Westminster in 1984. Their appearance was in connection with a fashion show to mark the centenary of the NSPCC charity.

Princess Margaret played herself in a brief scene where she starred as a surprise guest at a fundraising event. The BBC explained: "The fictional fundraiser was in aid of the NSPCC, and the original plan was for the Duke of Westminster to appear in his capacity as chairman of the charity, at the invitation of Caroline Bone, who was a relation in the fiction. "However, when Princess Margaret was informed she asked to take part too, in her role as NSPCC president.
