It was quite a visual spectacle at the Filipino Community of Guam’s Philippine Independence Ball on June 16 at the Dusit Thani Resort Guam. With close to 500 guests in attendance, the event was filled with many vivid displays of the Philippines’ national costumes — the Barong Tagalog for men and Filipiniana for women. The event was held in celebration of the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence from Spain and the FCG’s 70th Anniversary as an organization.

The Independence Ball is considered the FCG’s biggest annual formal event and it is often filled with Filipino cuisine, songs and dances. This year’s keynote speaker was Jhosep Y. Lopez, associate justice, Supreme Court of the Philippines, and the Kalilayan Folkloric Group of Catanauan, Quezon, treated the crowd to a nostalgic repertoire of music and traditional dances from different Philippine regions.
