Frank Martin backed himself into the corner one too many times, and Gervonta “Tank” Davis finally made him pay on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden. Davis (30-0, 28 knockouts) retained the WBA world lightweight title with an eighth-round knockout of Martin (18-1, 12 KOs) in the main event of the pay-per-view card in front of 13,249 fans in the 100th night of championship fights in the storied arena’s history. It was the first fight in 421 days for Davis, one of the sport’s biggest stars.
Davis dropped a staggered Martin with a massive left and immediately ran across the ring and jumped on the ropes to celebrate before the referee even began his count. Also on the card, star David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) claimed the WBC interim world title in his first fight moving up to light heavyweight with a unanimous-decision win over former world champ Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs). This is a developing story.
