The metro area’s always crowded summer music scene goes into overdrive this weekend, with a half-dozen mostly outdoor festivals taking place from Detroit’s Cultural Center to Pontiac and beyond. The offerings are varied, too, including ..

. • Diverse as ever, the 33rd annual Concert of Colors is once again taking over Detroit’s Midtown and Cultural Center areas through Sunday, July 21, with more than 50 performances and other events at 10 venues. Highlights include an MC5 celebration from 4:45-7:30 p.



m. Friday at the Detroit Historical Museum (including a premiere of a “Tales From the D” episode featuring Don Was); Was’ annual Detroit All Star Revue at 8 p.m.

Sunday, themed “Peace, Love and Understanding” with Marshall Crenshaw, the Corktown Popes, Herschel Boone, Carolyn Striho and others; a performance just before that, at 5:30 p.m., by Straight Ahead with Umar Bin Hassan of the Last Poets; and performances throughout the weekend by Transglobal Underground, Peanut Butter Mosquito the Dave Sharp World’s Quartet, the Chris Canas Band, the Polish Muslims and many others.

• Live music will play a part in this weekend’s Farmington Founders Festival, which is celebrating two milestones — the 60th anniversary of the event and the city’s bicentennial. Fifty Amp Fuse and Dave Fio of “American Idol” fame will be among many performers near the beer tent at Grand Riv.
