When top-seeded and No. 7 in the NJ.com Top 20 Bernards stepped onto their home field for the South Jersey, Group 1 championship they were competing to reach their first sectional title after falling short in the finals five times in the last ten years.
To make matters more dramatic, the Mountaineers were facing off against second-seeded and No. 17 Rumson Fair-Haven, the team that bested them in last year’s sectional championship. Fireworks are almost guaranteed in a scenario like that, and the game lived up to expectations and then some as Bernards’ Logan Stevens delivered a double-overtime goal to end an electrifying contest 9-8 in the Mountaineers favor and give the team its first-ever sectional title.
