September is the time of year when preppiness is at its peak, and are especially common, given their “back to school” associations. Over recent seasons, however, loafers have crept their way into our spring and summer wardrobes, and are no longer the reserve of smart ensembles. In fact, wearing loafers with white socks has become a popular pairing, with celebrities and fashion week-attendees alike styling theirs with skirts and dresses, and socks intentionally on show.
When it comes to silhouettes, this season’s standouts include: slimline loafers from the likes of Jil Sander and The Row (as seen on Hailey Bieber and Taylor Russell), driving loafers, lug-sole versions, and stacked-sole styles from Gucci. The latter were central to creative director Sabato de Sarno’s debut at the house, which featured no less than 25 platformed loafers on the catwalk. The trick to transitioning your loafers from reliable autumn companion to summer staple? Before taking the plunge, consider which shapes best complement your wardrobe, and try on several styles to see which ones you gravitate towards.
We also recommend selecting a size that you can wear with varying sock thicknesses, to ensure you can make the most of them all year round..
