Portia Modise, the former captain of South Africa’s national football team, has made a heartfelt appeal to her fans for assistance in recovering her car following a harrowing hijacking incident outside her home in Soweto. In a video shared on Instagram, Modise recounted how she was confronted by armed individuals who stole her mobile phone, and keys and drove away with her vehicle. The Portia Modise Foundation disclosed that the renowned Banyana Banyana star remains deeply affected by the ordeal.
Modise, the first African footballer to achieve 100 international goals, retired from professional football in 2015. Despite the trauma of the hijacking, she reassured her supporters that she sustained no physical injuries, stating, “I am not OK but I am grateful for life.” In her social media post, the 41-year-old provided her stolen blue Polo Golf registration details, urging anyone who spots the vehicle to contact her immediately.
The video plea has garnered widespread sympathy and solidarity from fans, yet Modise’s car has not yet been recovered. Modise, who debuted internationally at 16 in 2000, holds a record for the most appearances for Banyana Banyana. Her illustrious career includes a nomination for the Fifa Player of the Year in 2005 and being named Player of the Tournament at the African Women’s Championship in 2006.
