18 rounds down, six to go – and we’ve still got no idea what the hell is this bonkers season! Two wins and percentage separate second and THIRTEENTH on the ladder – there’s a bigger gap between second and Sydney on top once again. Last weekend’s heroes (read: Port Adelaide, Fremantle and Essendon) are this week’s zeroes, while teams in the gun all week (read: the Western Bulldogs and Gold Coast) pulled themselves back onto the tracks. The ladder is mayhem, the Swans and Giants are at each other’s throats on line, and there’s a whole lot to get stuck right into.
Let’s begin. More AFL 1. Taking stock There might have, at some point over the last 30 years, been more than the 13 teams at the moment vying for spots in the eight this late into a season; but surely there have never been fewer teams who most people would agree are locks for finals.
You can pretty much only ink in Sydney to appear in September at this point (and the minor premiership too, while you’re at it); everyone else is only a poor fortnight away from being in proper strife. Take Carlton; from riding high in second two weeks ago, they’re now one horror loss away from dropping out of the eight entirely, though a stack of results would need to go their way. With Charlie Curnow looking injured – and wayward in front of goal – and the midfield once again being carried by Patrick Cripps, this week’s clash with North Melbourne now looms as a bit of a danger game for the team who were recent.
