ROCHESTER — What is the secret to making a popular and trendy activity into a business that continues to bring back customers week after week? Over the years there have been different "fad"-like entertainment facilities that people thought wouldn’t last long. These fads are often activities that garner a lot of traction and popularity through social media. When they fade from our social media feeds, they often fade out of existence.

Throughout the years Rochester has had many businesses come and go, but some of the businesses that have been around for a while revolve around a few of these fads. One such business is Unraveled Escape Room, which has been around since 2016. Ryan Steiner opened the escape room with his wife, Jackie.



She handles the ideas and he handles the puzzles and build-outs. Escape rooms were a craze that became more popular in the 2010s. The activity involves a group of people locked in a room who then have to work together to solve puzzles to escape within a certain time limit.

ADVERTISEMENT Unraveled currently offers two escape room options, the King Tut Room and the Ragnarok Room, but Ryan and Jackie are looking at adding two more in the near future. “The rooms don't get switched out all often, typically it's about every five years,” Ryan said. “It really depends on the number of tourists to a particular city, and Rochester does have quite a large tourist population.
