Pressure is mounting for global fast fashion brand Shein’s Perth pop-up to be scrapped for a second time, with a petition calling on the Royal Agricultural Society of WA to reconsider playing host over environmental concerns. The ultra-cheap online retailer announced its three-day pop-up would take place at the Claremont Showgrounds from July 5 after its initial plan was cancelled by Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre. Shein is the 14th most downloaded free application on Apple’s Australian app store.

Credit: Getty The event marks the retailer’s first physical shopfront in WA, with more than 2500 people registering their interest. But a petition has since been established calling on the RASWA to reconsider hosting the event and for the community to boycott it over concerns about its impact on the environment, the broader community and the precedent it could set. The change.



org campaign has already gained more than 4700 in the past 48 hours, several of whom have called on the RASWA to “read the room” and questioned whether the decision aligned with its pledge to promote the people, goods and services of WA. Principal petitioner and sustainable fashion advocate Hazel Law told WAtoday the petition was borne out of concern shared by her industry colleagues. Law said she hoped, at the very least, the petition would raise awareness of the dangers of fast fashion and encourage the public to think about where their garments come from and where they’re likely to end up.
