KOCHI: Summer showers are in full swing, serving as a prelude to the monsoon season just weeks away. While the rhythmic pitter-patter of rain offers reprieve from the sapping heat, it also calls for a fashion switch. Yes, fashion is not anymore the last thing on people’s minds when stepping out on a rainy day.

Though not as popular as the spring and summer lines of clothing, designers and stylists assert that this is the season to experiment and brighten up your rainy wardrobe. “The rainy season deserves a spot in fashion. There’s a lot of scope for experimentation,” says fashion stylist Ammu Varghese.

“Malayalis are slowly moving beyond the priority of staying dry. Playing with colours and the fabric can be exciting even as dark clouds loom over the skies. For many, this is the best time to bring out the bright and neon prints.

Hot pinks, red, orange, indigo, blues, fuchsia and tie-dyes, can help break the mundane. No matter how dampening the rains could get, there’s always scope for an element of fun,” says popular designer and Rouka founder Sreejith Jeevan. In one of his earlier monsoon editions, Sreejith brought out prints that evoke a sense of nostalgia – paper boats, grandpa umbrellas, a cyclist balancing while pedalling, and leaf motifs were some of the prints.

“One can never go wrong with bold colours during the rainy season,” he adds. “There’s a free spirit during this season, and a style statement could be brought with creative use of colours.
