It’s been 14 years since a Berks team won a state baseball title. Gov. Mifflin (23-5) hopes to end that drought Friday when it plays in the PIAA Class 5A championship game against Hollidaysburg (17-5) at 4:30 p.

But it was in the semifinals that the Scouts pulled out one of the most memorable wins in Berks sports history, against BCIAA rival Twin Valley. The Scouts, who were playing Twin Valley for the fifth time that season, trailed heading into the seventh inning in the semifinal game at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading. Conrad Weiser’s Tanner Lutz sent the game to extra innings with a groundout to tie the game.

And then in the eighth inning, before 3,000 fans, Aaron Price blasted a game-winning home run for a thrilling 5-4 victory and a trip to the state title game against Hershey. Four nights later in Altoona, the Scouts beat Hershey, becoming only the fourth Berks County team to win league, district and state titles in the same season. After a 3-3 start in which the Scouts lost three straight after opening the season with three wins, they didn’t lose a game the rest of the way.
