ST. JOHN — It could've been mistake for a scene from a Christmas movie. Although it is the end of May and 80 degrees at first pitch, the Classs 4A Sectional 1 semifinal between Munster and Hammond Central was full of holiday spirit.
Flecks of white cottonwood floated through the sky and stuck to the brown turf infield like a late December flurry of snow. When the PA system did not work for the national anthem, both teams broke out in song. Each team was linked in some fashion, swaying to off-tune song.
Both dugouts were cheering and chanting loud for all to hear. The Christmas miracle came in favor of the Mustangs, however, as they run-ruled the Wolves, winning 10-0 in just four innings. "We have great energy as a team, we have great chemistry as a team, so it's nice to come out and do that regardless of the opponent no matter what the situation is, in season or in postseason whatever it is," Munster head coach Jill Perez said.
"It's something I am always proud of." Munster freshman Kaylee O'Connell sat down all three Hammond Central hitters in the first inning on strikes. The second inning was where the Munster bats got hot.
Hammond Central found itself in a pitching rut, walking batter after batter. Eventually the Wolves were stuck in a bases-loaded, one out situation. The Mustangs plated 10 runs in the frame.
Munster made sure to shut the door after its rally, with O'Connell recording three quick outs. "I just always tell myself to stay focused, like ignore what else is .
