MIAMI — Nick Pivetta, the pride of Victoria, Canada, seemed intent on making it a memorable Fourth of July for the Red Sox on Thursday afternoon. The righthander carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Miami Marlins. Pivetta lost his bid for history, but the Sox went on to win the game, 6-5, in 12 innings.

Pivetta was magnificent, striking out 10 and giving up what was mostly an assortment of weak contact until Jesús Sanchez belted a long triple with two outs in the seventh. Pivetta left the game with a 2-0 lead then lost the decision when Justin Slaten and Brennan Bernardino gave up two runs with two outs in the eighth inning. Tyler O’Neill’s single off Calvin Faucher scored ghost runner Jarren Duran with the go-ahead run in the 11th.

Facing Matt Andriese, the Sox took the lead back in the top of the 12th on a ground out by David Hamilton.

O’Neill added an RBI double, the first extra-base hit of the game for the Sox. This time, the two-run lead held and the Sox had a three-game series sweep as Greg Weissert picked up his first career save. Pivetta was the story for much of the game as he dominated the Marlins.

Miami nearly had a hit in the third inning when Vidal Brujan hit a 91-mile-per-hour line drive to shortstop. But Ceddanne Rafaela jumped up.
