North Coast Section playoffs have come to a close for H-DNL teams as both Del Norte and St. Bernard’s softball teams fell by one run apiece in their championship games Friday. The H-DNL has two section winners with South Fork’s softball and Ferndale’s baseball team winning the Division 6 championship and securing berths into CIF NorCal playoffs, where they could be joined by other H-DNL teams if they to receive an at-large berth to continue their season.
St. Bernard’s lost in walk-off fashion on the road against Berean Christian High School 10-9 in the bottom of the 7th inning Friday for the Division 5 title. The game opened up with Crusader freshman Kyna Tupua reaching base on a walk before swiping second and third base and coming into score when the Eagles’ throw got past the third baseman as St.
Bernard’s took the 1-0 lead in the first inning. All would be well for the Crusaders until the bottom of the second inning when the Eagles scored five times to take off with the lead in Friday’s championship. Berean Christian couldn’t come back with a shutout inning, as St.
Bernard’s answered with three runs to cut their deficit down to just 5-4. The back-and-forth game continued into the fourth inning when the Eagles added two more runs before the Crusaders evened the game at 7-7 after putting up three runs in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Berean Christian hopped back in front with a run but the Crusaders had one final answer, tying the game in the top o.
