Nathan Aspinall could join elite company by winning the upcoming World Matchplay 2024. 'The Asp' picked up the crown in 2023 at the iconic Winter Gardens with a superb run which saw him lift the trophy after beating Johnny Clayton 18-6 in the final. Aspinall will be returning to the iconic stage to defend his title when he takes on Luke Woodhouse this weekend in the opening round.
If he can secure back-to-back titles in Blackpool, it would see him join an elite club with darts legends Phil Taylor , Michael Van Gerwen and Rod Harrington as the only players to win the tournament twice consecutively. And Aspinall is certainly up for the challenge, but has admitted it will be a tough battle given the current raised standard. He told talkSPORT.
com: "Yeah that would be really good. I'm really looking forward to it. "It's going to be tough, I think the standard this year is amazing and they are playing well.
"I haven't got a clue who is going to win it to be honest with you, it is so open this year. "It could be anyone from the person who came 32 on the Pro Tour to the world No.1.
"It would be amazing to win it back-to-back, but I know it's a cliche, it has to be one game at a time. "I need to get past Woodhouse and I'll probably play Danny Noppert as I play him every TV event, and then we will see after that." The event is hugely popular on the PDC tour, and has seen eras of dominance during its time, including from Taylor who won the showpiece event 16 times.
