In an increasingly competitive world, encouraging good citizenship in the younger generations has never been more important. One Mount Pleasant club knows this. The East Cooper-Mount Pleasant (ECMP) Kiwanis Club awarded 70 students at Mount Pleasant Academy (MPA) each with a "Terrific Kids" certificate on June 5.
The school’s multipurpose room was crowded with proud parents, siblings and teachers who came to support the award winners. Presenting the awards was club President Bob Reinhold, who outlined the ‘Terrific Kids’ title before recognizing each student one by one: “The teachers choose kids that have certain attributes like they’re kind, they care for one another, they have empathy,” he said. “It’s a good citizenship award.
” His colleague and past club president Ram Dachepalli agreed on the purpose of the award: “People with good grades, they get a pat on the back. But there are other people who do so many good things. They’re nice — they’re kind.
Our idea is to recognize people that do good things,” he said. But the kids weren’t the only ones receiving such awards. Each year, the ECMP Kiwanis Club awards one "Terrific Teacher" award.
That morning, Reinhold congratulated Betsy Quirin, a first grade and special needs teacher: “This year, Mrs. Quirin was entrusted with a new challenge: moving from second to first grade, which she embraced without complaint,” he said. For students and parents, Quirin made a difference in the community.
