A quick glance at this year’s Vermont boys Ultimate standings shows Montpelier ranked ninth, meaning that the 4-3 Solons will be battling the next two weeks to secure a first-round home playoff game. But the defending champs proved Sunday that appearances can be deceiving while bringing home the hardware at the biggest tournament in New England. The Capital City gang placed first out of 16 schools in the B division of the Pioneer Valley Invitational, recording a 5-1 record during the two-day tourney in Northampton, Mass.

The Solons capped the regional showcase event with five straight victories, beating perennial Connecticut powerhouse Middletown in the semifinals before downing Maine’s Forrest City in the final. “We used our depth,” MHS coach Cam Mack said. “But in the critical moments, we used what was working for us.
