The Mets are taking their show across the pond this week for the U.K. to see.
We’ll find out soon whether it’s a good show or not, but at least we know it’s never boring. After a disastrous 10-game homestand that saw more blown saves and blown leads than the team could have ever imagined, this week the Mets will play three games against the Washington Nationals before heading to London for two games against the Philadelphia Phillies. The focus this week will undoubtedly be on the bullpen.
There are plenty of areas of concern right now, but the bullpen is by far the biggest. “That’s the priority right now. It’s not a secret,” manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters in Washington on Monday.
“We will continue to mix and match. We’ve got a lot of veteran guys there. They’ve done it, they had success and I’m pretty confident they’ll get the job done here pretty soon.
” The Mets have lost six times this season after entering the eighth inning with leads. That’s four times than any other team in the league has blown an eighth-inning lead. Five of those losses came in May with one coming Sunday.
It seems almost unthinkable for a team that has right-handers Edwin Diaz and Adam Ottavino in the bullpen, but Diaz didn’t look like himself even before a shoulder impingement landed him on the injured list last week. Ottavino got back on track Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a hold, only for left-hander Jake Diekman to blow the save. Even worse, former.
