Olivia Lemon, 11, left, and her brother Ethan, 13, prepare chili cheese dogs for the first customers of the lunch rush at the Bub’s Beans hot dog cart, run by the siblings and their friend Lyla White, 13, at the Lemon’s home in Sandisfield on Thursday. SANDISFIELD — On the side of this stretch of Route 57 that blasts drivers though the wilds of southeastern Berkshire County, business is booming for three young entrepreneurs whose nicknames are Bubs, Beans and Beans. “Bubs’” proper name is Ethan Lemon, 13.
His sister, “Beans,” is Olivia Lemon, 11. And the other “Beans” is Lyla White, 13, who this week is away on vacation with her family. Together they run Bub’s Beans & The Dogs hot dog cart on the Lemon family’s front yard.
This is the second week of their third season. The summer before that, they were in the lemonade business. At lunchtime on Thursday, the hungry started lining up: the construction crew returning from early morning roadwork in Pittsfield; the mail lady; the plumber.
And whomever else happens to be driving by and fancies a frankfurter, beans, chips and drinks (and maybe some gossip, but only if you eat. The sign on the cart says: “No Gossip Without Purchase”). It’s a mile from the York Lake entrance.
More precisely, it sits at 234 Sandisfield Road (Route 57). There are shaded picnic tables and plenty of roadside parking. It is open on Thursdays and Fridays — a strategic move made after surveying driving patterns outside the Lem.
