The Marshall-Harrison County Juneteenth Celebration is underway as organizers recently announced plans for this year’s 10th annual commemoration. This year’s commemorative events kicked off Saturday, June 2 with the annual crowning of Miss Juneteenth, to be held in the Student Union Ballroom of Wiley University. “In communities across the country, Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States,” the Juneteenth committee noted.
“On June 19, 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. In 2021, June 19 became a federal holiday in the U.S.
” This year’s commemorative theme is: “Resilience: Remembering Our Ancestors.” “Now in our 10th year, we are thankful for everyone who works together to help us commemorate this important time in our history,” stated co-organizers, Don and Alma Ravenell. “There is something for everyone to enjoy.
It’s not too late to get involved.” Other commemorative activities scheduled include the Juneteenth commemorative program, parade, Black Business Expo, domino tournament, Freedom Walk, fashion show and new events that include a 3-On-3 Basketball Tournament and Hip Hop block party. The new 3-on-3 basketball tournament will begin at 7 a.
m., Saturday, June 15, at George Washington Carver Center, located at 2302 Holland St. in Marshall.
