Kentfield intersection needs a better solution I am writing to express my strong desire for intersection improvements across Marin County. As the population continues to grow, roads and infrastructure must be updated to accommodate the increase. My grievance stems from one particularly ill-designed intersection that could easily be remedied.
The junction between Kent Avenue, Woodland Road and College Avenue in Kenfield is highly inefficient. I have been stuck in delays there many times. The flow of vehicle traffic is dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Five roads come together in a disorganized fashion, with six stop signs to direct traffic. After researching the functionality of roundabouts, I believe building one there would be a viable solution. Just by looking at the aerial view of the intersection, one can see how naturally a roundabout would fit, the tire marks from vehicles already create an outline of a circle.
Due to its proximity to schools, it is vital that this intersection is designed with safety as a top priority. According to research, roundabouts are remarkably safer than stop-sign-controlled intersections. The design of a roundabout decreases the number of possible conflict points within the intersection and it adjusts the angle of entry into the intersection.
It would eliminate the possibility of severe head-on and right-angle (aka T-bone) collisions, which are prevalent in four-way intersections. Roundabouts force drivers to decrease their speed, maki.
