Every year, there are a number of political speeches that are made that speak of what we would like to see in The Bahamas. A part of that vision is that we have better people, better families, no corruption and a focus on the values that once made us great. Sometimes the Bible is quoted and the importance of Christian principles invoked.
Sometimes the notion that we are a Christian nation surfaces and we speak of statements like, “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, then I will hear from Heaven and heal their land”. This sounds good and noble, but if we really want a better Bahamas, there are difficult decisions and choices to be made and the decisions should make sense. Recently, a medicinal marijuana bill was introduced, and as I perused the bill, I was left confused about what the bill really meant and what is the intention of the bill, if it is about the betterment of The Bahamas.
What do I mean? The following are several points to clarify my thoughts and questions regarding the bill. Medicine: I have no issue with marijuana as a medicine because it is no different than any other plant that is used to derive ingredients for healing. There are many other plants such as cocoa, opium etc.
, that all end up as medicines. If medicine is the intention, I assume that we could pass legislation that would allow for marijuana to be an approved medical substance like any other, regulated in the same fashion as other medications.
