A 36st shop owner has refused to take part in a version of US reality show My 600-lb life – because he wants to "promote obesity". Luis Delgado claims that signing up to the Mexican version of the show, named Kils Mortales, would go against his plus-size clothing business which goes by the name of Big&Fashion. The show, like its TLC counterpart in America, follows the story of morbidly obese patients who try to cope with their emotional and physical problems with the help of bariatric surgery, in a bid to change their lives forever in a positive way.
While the show's participants are not paid monetary sums for appearing on the programme, they are given the means to achieve their change through bariatric surgery and psychological and medical support. In Mexico, surgery costs around 110,000 Mexican pesos (around £4,800). Luis said he was first approached to do the show through one of his social media followers, but after giving it some thought, he turned it down.
Giving his reasons, he shared: "They offered me the operation, the psychologist, the assessment. "But I couldn't continue with Big&Fashion, I couldn't eat the same way or continue with my brand, or promote obesity, because they were doing the opposite; I didn't like that." Luis also took issue with the filming process, which is carried out inside the participants' homes.
