This week is GoByBike week, a time when our community is encouraged to use bikes to get the places they need to go. GoByBike week is a wonderful provincial initiative that is supported by a number of community organizations, businesses, and the City of Campbell River. I love GoByBike week.

I have attended several community events, and I have rode with my kids to school every day this week. It's too bad that our Campbell River streets are not safe enough for GoByBikeWeek to not also bring risk and injury to the people and children who choose to participate. One day this week I returned home on my bike, to find a person on their bike had been hit by a car at the three-way stop sign at Erickson and Harrogate.

This is the second time that I have witnessed someone get hit, on a bike, at this exact spot. Every day, I look out my window, and I see people run the three-way stop at Erickson and Harrogate. I have had a car plow through my front yard, and into a telephone pole, because they lost control while speeding through the stop sign.

I have seen motorbikes spin out and crash. I have seen several cars swiped, when one car rolled the stop sign (and I won't even get into the lack of a sidewalk & bike lane, or the water main issues that we have here on Erickson). My kids, and many others, cross at this intersection and walk down Harrogate in order to get to school.

There are no crosswalk markings at my kids' crossing point, and limited crosswalk markings across Harrogate. Everyday, I.
