As the Savannah Bananas barnstormed their way into Buffalo, thousands of fans flocked to Sahlen Field to witness their unique brand of baseball that features its own quirky rules and rowdy atmosphere. The stadium was sold out for the whole weekend, filled with families who decided to bring their kids along to witness the Bananas exhibit their own eccentric take on America's national pastime. And the Bananas didn’t disappoint, sweeping their series against a rival Banana Ball team, The Firefighters, which culminated in a 4-1 win at Sunday’s afternoon game.
A sold out crowd watches the Savannah Bananas on Friday. “The kids had an absolute blast,” said Genny Kinyon. She attended the game with her 3-year-old son and her husband, who coaches a Lou Gehrig Youth Softball team that also joined in on the fun in the stands.
Kinyon was impressed with the engagement of the Bananas with kids, who she said were “screaming their faces off” throughout the game. Baseball wasn’t the only interest of those who attended, as many fans milled about the stadium both between and during innings to grab a bite to eat. One such family who found themselves enjoying a helping of ice cream were the Pychels, who were among the winners of a ticket lottery that gave them the opportunity to witness the Bananas’ 2024 World Tour.
A nine-inning game itself is only a sliver of the fun of Banana Ball. It quickly turns into an overwhelming feast for the senses, and it’s easy to get lost in the sid.
