Whether Melbourne restaurateur Jamal Mohammad will be a victor in court in his long-running feud with underworld figure Mick Gatto remains to be seen. But in the fashion stakes, he is a clear winner. Jamal Mohammad arrives at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Credit: Chris Hopkins And so it was in Melbourne Magistrates Court No.2 on Monday morning, when in walked Mohammad, immediately striding up to the court table and pouring himself a glass of water. Like a boss.



He was dressed for the part too, with charcoal pinstriped trousers, an alpha mane of grey hair swept down into a ponytail and what to our eyes looked like a dinner jacket. Mohammed met Gatto in 1999. We don’t have the details of their dispute, but Mohammad recently launched a private prosecution against Gatto and now wants to take it all the way to the Supreme Court.

The Office of Public Prosecutions is not so sure, and Gatto’s lawyer Martin Amad previously told the court the accusations were fanciful. Mohammed previously waged a campaign against Gatto on TikTok, so court watchers were primed for a sequel. He told the court he had 1100 pages of evidence to make his case.

But magistrate Brett Sonnet warned him that he cannot represent himself if the case moves to a higher court. Sonnet also flagged that the OPP should decide by the next appearance on August 14 if it will take over the case. And that was that.
