A HAIRDRESSER has been shocked to find out that a dress given to him by a client is now worth $7,500. Its celebrity owner and two details inside caused the value of the gown to skyrocket over the decades. A hairdresser from Palm Springs, California decided to get an appraisal on a gown he had been given in 1982 by a famous client.
"I was working with Brooke Shields in New York on the Broadway production of Grease," he explained on an episode of Antiques Roadshow. "At the end of her run on that show, she surprised me by coming into the dressing room, and she pulled this gown out and told me if I could fit into it and wear it before she left the show, I could have it." The hairdresser managed to squeeze himself into the gown and was photographed alongside Brooke in the dress.
The gown itself was a long sequined number designed by Bob Mackie. The legendary designer later sent the new owner the original sketch of the gown too. Appraiser Steven Porterfield of The Cat's Meow in Midland, Texas, was highly impressed with what he saw.
He estimated that a Bob Mackie gown from this era would typically sell for $1,000 to $1,500. However, two details on this particular dress made it worth significantly more. The dress was signed by both Brooke Shields and Bob Mackie on the inside.
What's more, the hairdresser had the sketch of the dress. "That creates a wonderful part of fashion history, so, at auction, I believe this would probably bring around $7,500." "That's pretty amazing," said the .
