How Keir Starmer has turned his back on vegetarianism by cooking tandoori salmon on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch, as he becomes latest to ditch veggie eating after Martin Freeman - so is this just a ploy to curry favour with voters? By Aidan Radnedge Published: 07:23 EDT, 20 May 2024 | Updated: 08:24 EDT, 20 May 2024 e-mail 20 View comments Flip-flop Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has told of not eating meat for 30 years - only to cook tandoori salmon on Channel 4 's Sunday Brunch this weekend, prompting scrutiny of a new strategy to curry favour with voters. Sir Keir's move away from full-blown vegetarianism echoes a decision recently made and announced by actor Martin Freeman , who revealed he had begun eating meat again after 38 years boycotting the product . Even presenter Tim Lovejoy expressed surprise Sir Keir was appearing on the light entertainment cookery show rather than face up to serious questioning over policy as other politicians were doing - including his frontbench colleague Wes Streeting .

It has been suggested that Sir Keir - like Prime Minister Rishi Sunak - is prioritising softer options such as daytime TV programmes and podcasts in a bid to convert more casual voters rather than politics obsessives. And his choice of dish on yesterday's show has raised eyebrows, since he has been vocal in the past about his decades-long vegetarianism - while confessing how much he 'misses meat'.
