More info You wouldn’t want to mess with big Grant Hanley. He might look like a physical specimen from the stands or when he’s filling the TV screen but, in person, what you’re dealing with here is a genuine, bona fide monster of a man. And on Monday, as he prowled around Scotland’s training base in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, he was a monster of a man in a monster of a mood.

It’s fair to say these last few days have taken a toll on Steve Clarke and his squad given the wounds which were inflicted upon them during Friday night’s laceration in Munich. Pride has been stung. Egos have been bruised.

And there is a sense these players cannot be uncaged again quickly enough in order to do something meaningful about it in their second Euro 2024 game against Switzerland in Cologne on Wednesday night. They’ve also had to take a tongue lashing or two from their own manager who could not believe how they failed to take on board his instructions for the opener against Germany and then failed to implement them so spectacularly. All of which might help to explain why Hanley gave off the impression of a man spoiling for a fight when he faced the media at lunchtime.

Clarke – in his own words – spent the weekend kicking backsides and giving out cuddles .
