It was another The Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media girls’ basketball season that ended with a team celebrating in Hershey as the 2023-2024 campaign saw Archbishop Wood earn its fourth straight PIAA championship with a 37-27 win over Cathedral Prep in the Class 5A final. All-Area first team selections Ava Renninger – the area’s Athlete of the Year – and junior Emily Knouse – helped the Vikings best Cathedral Prep 37-27 to cap a 15-game winning streak and give Wood a record ninth state title. North Penn ripped off 17 consecutive wins during the year as the Knights did a few things they had not done since 2017 – winning a Suburban One League title (taking the Colonial Division crown) and reaching the PIAA quarters.
North Penn made the Class 6A’s final eight in dramatic fashion as first-team pick senior Caleigh Sperling connected on an overtime buzzer-beater to beat North Allegheny in the second round. Upper Dublin’s superb sister act of sophomore Meghan Ngo (first team) and senior Amy Ngo (second team) aided in the Cardinals capturing the SOL Liberty Division title. UD reached the SOL Tournament final and qualified for states as it finished 24-6.
Germantown Academy earned a share of the Inter-Ac League championship for the first time since 2019-2020, the Patriots splitting the title with Notre Dame and Penn Charter. GA went on to reach the PAISAA semifinals as it posted a 24-6 record. Gwynedd Mercy won its second AACA title in three years, topping Villa Ma.
