Former Galway U20 coach Jeff Lynskey has revealed the role played by Eddie O’Sullivan in selecting Henry Shefflin as Tribe boss – and added the ex-Ireland head coach didn’t “have a clue” about hurling. After winning 10 All-Ireland medals as a player with Kilkenny, Shefflin moved into management and secured his first inter-county gig with Galway in 2021. His third season in the dugout recently ended in dismal fashion, with Galway crashing out of the championship following defeat against Dublin .

Shefflin conceded it “could be the end of the road” and with speculation growing over his future as manager, Lynskey declared the recruitment process must be different next time around – while making the bizarre revelation that O’Sullivan was part of the selection committee. O’Sullivan served as Ireland’s head coach from 2001 until 2008 and won three Six Nations Triple Crowns throughout his tenure. He subsequently took charge of the United States before roles with French club Biarritz and Brown University followed.



He has been noted in recent years as a ‘coaching consultant with the Ivy League College and it appears he was drafted in in a similar capacity by Galway as they made their selection, with Lynskey revealing all on how it worked back in 2021 before Shefflin was picked. He said to the Maroon and White Podcast : ‘If we are playing politics with this position and it is about clicks on social media, we are in trouble. It can’t be about that.
