Henry Croft sells concrete during the week and on Saturdays this season has enjoyed nothing better than paving his way towards goal in utterly steely fashion. This particular weekend saw Croft run out for his Great Britain debut (having been given holiday time from work) after an electric season for Beeston. A dream afternoon at Lee Valley for Croft was then ushered in as early as the 12th minute.

Wth his back to goal, he turned and whipped an unstoppable, boxer-like forehand past David Harte to bulge the net once more. It led GB to a 5-1 win over Ireland to spark the London leg of their Pro League campaign into life. “It’s all happened quite quickly really,” a disbelieving Croft said afterwards.



“Walking out, singing the national anthem, my parents and best mates here, and then scoring pretty quickly with a goal I like to score. A great day.” Croft, who works as a sales coordinator for Tarmac, was called up, in his words, for a “guest appearance” at Bisham Abbey a few months ago.

“I got invited back again and now I’ve managed to make my debut,” he added. “I’ve come off the back of a decent season for Beeston and it’s flown by really and ‘wow’.” “It’s been fun.

My bosses are probably watching and I really appreciate the time off. They have let me off with a bit of holiday and it’s been great. They have helped me a lot.
