The Erwin Board of Mayor and Aldermen met Thursday, June 27, for a rescheduled meeting with the top items on the agenda being to consider the recent and unexpected resignation of Alderwoman Paula Kay Edwards, who also served as vice mayor, and to finalize the town budget. Edwards, a member of the BMA for the past three-and-a-half years, resigned unexpectedly about a week prior to the meeting on June 27. With the exception of Edwards, all members of the BMA were present.
Edwards’ usual place next to Alderman Mickey Hatcher was empty, and her name plate had been removed. Mayor Glenn White read a prepared statement in which he addressed the resignation of Edwards. The mayor stated that the board thanked Edwards for her service to Erwin and wished her well going forward.
The board also heard a suggestion from a citizen during the public comments period that meeting agendas be made available to the public in a more timely fashion before meetings. Mayor White addressed the comment and noted that board agendas are posted on the Town of Erwin’s website “usually” the Friday before the normally scheduled meetings and thanked the citizen for his concern. The BMA then considered the second reading of the Erwin budget.
The board passed the second reading 4-1, with Angie Vaughn the only dissenting vote. In other business, the board considered Library Board reappointments for the coming year. Andy Frazier, Jan Bowden and Gail Snodgrass were all unanimously approved, receiving applau.
