In an interview with this newspaper at the weekend, Mr Varadkar said the next Irish Government needs to take the initiative regarding reunification. He said that Dublin must be “active rather than passive” about Irish unity and the next administration south of the border should set up a “New Ireland Forum” to plan for the future regarding constitutional change. Taking to Facebook, the DUP’s East Londonderry candidate Gregory Campbell didn’t appear to be too enthused by Mr Varadkar’s comments.

“Leo, Listen carefully, very carefully. Whether your successor or his successors take one initiative or twenty one, WE AREN’T INTERESTED,” he wrote. “Persuading and being nice to us won’t change that, just as shooting and bombing us in the past didn’t.
