MOORHEAD — Joel Egerdahl and the Moorhead boys lacrosse team must have woken up in the year 2023 Thursday morning. That's because Thursday night's Section 8A championship game at Jim Gotta Stadium played out strikingly similar to last year's. Like 2023, the top-seeded Spuds were hosting St.
Michael-Albertville for the section title and the right to advance to the state tournament. Last year's game between the Spuds and Knights went to overtime before Egerdahl fielded a pass from teammate Jace Blythe and netted the sudden-death winner on his third goal of the contest. This year, Egerdahl did it again, taking a pass from Blythe and burying his third goal of the game 18 seconds into OT to give the Spuds a thrilling 10-9 win and a fourth-straight section championship.
"It feels amazing, I can't even describe it," Egerdahl said. "The pass coming from Jace Blythe once again, it's just amazing." Just like the two senior attackmen drew it up.
"Our (face-off-get-off player) Jett Mercil had a great game," Blythe said. "He passed to me, I went down the alley and rolled back. When I rolled back, I noticed I beat my guy a bit so I started hedging towards the net.
The slide sort of came to me, I saw Joel open, hit him and he took care of business." The Spuds will now begin a new business trip on Tuesday, taking their 13-3 record and six-game win streak into the state tournament set for June 11-15 at Chaska and Eden Prairie high schools outside the Twin Cities.
