DAYTON — What would a state track and field meet be without a little drama? Avon junior Rania Brown certainly did her part in providing some thrills June 1 in the Division I track and field championships at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium. Brown has been one of the leading throwers in Ohio all season and she has topped out at 153 feet, 8 inches this season. But when her first two throws of the preliminaries resulted in distances of just 110-5 and 118-1, she was in danger of not even making it to the finals.

“I was giving myself a heart attack,” she said. “On the first one, I missed my hand. I haven’t thrown around 110 for a hot minute, so it really got me nervous.

Then I missed my hand on the second one. I was like, ‘Look, it’s all or nothing. I need to make it to finals.

’ Brown came through in the clutch on her third throw, which covered 138-3 and moved her into third place. Once she found her groove, she had throws of 147-8, 151-3 and 151-10 to win the state title. “There was a little pressure because I wanted to prove I wasn’t a one-trick wonder,” Brown said.

“I wanted to prove this wasn’t a one-time thing. But I went out there and did what I had to do and I proved that I am where I am because I work hard.” Teammate Bridget Bergen placed third with a toss of 143-3, which left her one inch shy of second place and also one inch ahead of fourth place.

The 16 points scored by the Avon pair in the discus helped the Eagles place fifth as a team with 28 poi.
