Deontay Wilder's father Gary believes his career can be salvaged if he fires trainer Malik Scott. The 'Bronze Bomber' suffered a second consecutive defeat in brutal fashion after being dropped and stopped by Zhilei Zhang, which cast doubts on his boxing future. Wilder has yet to declare whether he will retire from the sport, but had suggested before the outing that he would hang up his gloves if he lost to Zhang.

In a surprising opinion, Wilder's dad Gary believes Scott is too friendly with his son and believes he has no place in the team if the American is to continue. “You need somebody you’re going to respect," he told USA Today Sports . "You don’t need a buddy to train you.

"It’s not too late for [Deontay]. I believe he got several good years left. Deontay’s always been a slugger.

"Now Malik’s trying to train him to be a boxer, and if you look at it, you’ll see that Deontay is not comfortable where he at. "As long as he tries to be a boxer, he’s not going to win. That’s the bottom line.

’’ Scott, a former boxer who had 42 professional fights, has worked with Wilder as his main trainer since 2021 after they became friends. During that time, the American lost his trilogy fight to Tyson Fury , then beat Robert Helenius, before his defeats to Joseph Parker and Zhang. It will now be a struggle for Wilder to ever return to the pinnacle of the division, given his distance from the world title mix.

The former WBC champion also appears to have lost his chance .
