Dean Eldon Tveter, 84, of New Town, ND, was called to his eternal resting place on June 11, 2024 in Fargo under the care of Sanford Hospice. Dean entered this world on January 20, 1940 in Powers Lake, ND, born to Rueben and Hilda (Thingvold) Tveter. He grew up in the coal mine housing south of Columbus, ND, and they later moved into town where he attended schools, graduating in 1958.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Columbus. One of Dean’s high school highlights was playing basketball for coach Dale Brown, who eventually became the coach of the LSU men’s basketball team, an experience he was very proud of. Dean spent a year at Wahpeton School of Science after which he moved back home and began his work with Baukol-Noonan Coal Mine.
Dean met Lois Skarphol in 1962, and they were married in September of 1963 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Noonan. Together they made their home in Columbus. In 1965 they moved to Keene and lived at the Texaco Blue Buttes Camp until it closed in 1969, when they moved to New Town, ND.
They raised their six children in New Town. He worked for Texaco until his first retirement in 1995. Dean was a volunteer firefighter for New Town from 1969-1997, serving as Chief from 1979-1982, and received the Lifetime Chiefs Certificate in honor of his service.
Throughout his life he made sure to keep busy. He sold farm eggs to his friends and neighbors, helped with fall harvest for Marne Aubol, he worked for Aubols Inc., and for Farmers U.
