The Mets could not replicate their offensive fire from the series opener and lost today’s game in the first inning, dropping the second game at Wrigley Field 8-1. Jameson Taillon was excellent today for the Cubs , throwing 93 pitches over seven innings, striking out ten and walking none while giving up just one run, a solo home run to Francisco Alvarez. Tylor Megill got roughed up in the first inning, giving up five runs in frustrating fashion.
After walking two of the first three batters of the game, Seiya Suzuki singled in the game’s first run. A ground out, a stolen base, and a single led to two more runs on nothing more than singles. However, a double by Dansby Swanson and a triple by old friend Pete Crow-Armstrong, both with two outs, put the Mets in a 5-0 hole.
The Cubs would add a sixth run in the third inning on a Christopher Morel solo shot. Megill had a hard time finding the strike zone, walking three and going deep into counts for most of his appearance. Although he managed to strike out six, he threw 78 pitches over three innings and was done after the third.
Danny Young, recalled earlier today when Sean Reid-Foley was placed on the IL, pitched a perfect fourth inning. After getting the first out in the fifth, Young was removed for Adrian Houser who gave up a double to Suzuki, but got through the inning unscathed. In the sixth, Crow-Armstrong singled and, despite a perfect back-pick throw by Francisco Alvarez, was not picked off first when Pete Alonso didn’t.
