CHATHAM — With the help of a gentle summer breeze, hundreds of flags waved Saturday morning as the Chatham Rotary Club hosted the opening ceremony for its Field of Honor. Saturday's event also opened a week of Fourth of July festivities beginning and ending in the historic county seat. “Our display at the Olde Dominion Agriculture Complex is designed to honor our hometown heroes who did — and are doing — their part to make our nation, our state, our community and our families better places to live and thrive," Chatham Rotary Club President Chris Lund said at the start of the dedication ceremony.

Paul Weishaar plays taps Saturday morning at the Olde Dominion Agriculture Complex at the opening ceremony for Chatham Rotary Club's Field of Honor. “The important thing is that we all, as a community, have to work together and support one another, and this is a visual demonstration of just that," Chatham Mayor Alisa Davis told the Register & Bee after the dedication.

The flags are purchased to honor or memorialize "hometown heroes." Davis has two flags for her father and brother. Her dad was in the United States Air Force and her brother was a nuclear engineer for the U.

S. Navy. “Everybody out there is working to support this community, whether it is first responders, medical professionals, military professionals, educators, mothers, fathers, grandmothers, everybody is working together for their community," Davis said.

“We are growing a little momentum every year,".
