ENID, Okla. — Nick Ecklor and his fellow crewmen will have to wait until next weekend to see if their Beeliner cardboard and duct tape boat will float, and they may get some added competition. The city of Enid postponed its 2024 Cardboard and Duct Tape Boat Race because of storms in the area Saturday evening.
The event will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, July 6, and registration will remain open for more entrants, according to an event official.
Ecklor and his family and two other families from Enid First Baptist, just north of Champlin Pool, combined to cover their boat with 36 rolls of duct tape for the race. They came complete with dry ice for smoke, handmade bee honeycomb and bee hats to complete the look. They said they haven’t even tried it on the water yet because they were too afraid it would compromise the integrity of the boat before race time.
Those wishing to enter must construct their boats from cardboard and duct tape only and before the race. No additional building materials are allowed. Paddles also must be made out of cardboard and duct tape.
Boats may be a maximum width of 60 inches (5 feet) and a maximum length of 84 inches (7 feet). Teams must consist of four people; however, only two can be in the boat. All ages are welcomed, but team members 9 and younger must have an adult in the boat with them.
Participants 12 and younger must have adult supervision with them. Life vests are encouraged. Four awards will be given: • Titanic Award, to the boat tha.
