NEW CLOTHES: Susan Lee recently hit the high street...
(Image: Getty Images/Gillian Vann) By Susan Lee After four years of sitting at home on a laptop, the lure of the office is strengthening once again, which is great except for one thing – I have nothing to wear. Now I know some – well, mainly my husband – will roll eyes at this but it's true; since March 2020 I have restricted my work-wear purchases to a few smart tops based on the fact nobody sees me from the waist down. Rummaging through my wardrobe, the awful truth hit me – I was way behind the fashion curve.
So off I went and hit the high street – and here's where it all went wrong because there is now so much choice there is actually none. I went to two big department stores where acres of clothes were on display. Rails of blouses and jeans, and jackets; clothes for day and night, for special occasions and weekends away, the school run and business meetings.
Punch drunk from trying to make a buying decision, I tried a couple more retailers. The options were endless – which fabric? What pattern? Short sleeved or long? Wide leg or cropped? Finally, I resorted to the cheaper end of things where it was worst of all. The store held so much stock – a lot of it on the floor – it was like an explosion at a jumble sale.
And this is just the high street. My daughter shops..
